The 5.

Part of my requirements for the coming year, are to perfect a hand form. Over the past few months, I have managed to put together my own form. I went with the five animals of Kung fu, and tried to incorporate the characteristics and survival techniques of each.  For example, crane is flowing and internal while dragon is quick and unpredictable. Leopard is strong and fast, while the snake is coiling, agile and whipping. Tiger is stealth, uses brute force, and follows up for the kill.

Putting this form together seems to have put me at a higher level of thinking with my king fu. For some years now, I have wanted to get to a higher level in my king fu. Not just physically, but mentally too. I still feel the same way, but with a huge difference than before. Now, I want to put in the effort to get better.  Before I just wished I could be better, but was not dedicated or disciplined enough to put in the work ethic needed to achieve it.  I can see that very clearly now.  I can also see how much work and dedication, and respect for myself and the art, that will be needed for me to get to the next level. I also know that it's important for me to go forward without comparing myself to others. That only creates a bad attitude within myself, which leads me no where, except to a dead end in my personal progression.

In preparation for my form, I have watched countless hours of videos, read numerous articles, practiced bits and pieces over and over, changing them as I go, and even starting all over again several times.  I have 2 notebooks full of notes and scribbles on top of scribbles. It's hard to explain, but it felt so incredibly amazing for me doing this.  Last week I finally finished putting it all together, and started the physical practice of performing what I have come up with. It's been a lot of fun, I have learned a ton, and there have even been many frustrations. I know there will be a lot of tweaking done over the next 12 months, but I look forward to it. I welcome the challenge to really and truly show the unique characteristics of each animal in my form.
